On Monday night, April 3rd, I was admitted to the hospital to be induced. They started me on the Cervadil at 10:00 p.m. I started to contract on my own within one hour. When they checked me to see where I was starting at I was 2 cm dilated and about 70% effaced. I was scheduled to be put on Pitocin Tuesday morning at around 11:00 a.m. However, since I was still contracting on my own and I had progressed to 3-4 cm and was 100% effaced, they decided to hold off on the Pitocin and broke my water instead.
By 3:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, I had stopped progressing. They decided to put me on the Pitocin for a little push. By 5 p.m. I was having pretty strong contractions in combination with vomiting and loss of bladder control. It was happening with every contraction, so I decided to get an epidural. After the epidural, I was feeling pretty comfortable. They decided to check me again and I still had not progressed any. They started to question the accuracy of the contractions the monitor were reading. They decided to hook up an internal fetal monitor to see what the contractions were really doing. It turns out they were not as strong as the external monitor was recording. They decided to up the Pitocin at that time. Also, when they hooked up the internal monitor, they found that there was a little meconium. There wasn't enough to be concerned, but they decided to do an amnio flush to get rid of it. Throughout all of this, our little girl was a trooper, her vitals all looked good, however, to be on safe side, they decided to give me some oxygen.
At 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night I had finally progress to 6-7 cm. I was so excited to hear I was almost done!! By midnight Wednesday morning, I was finally fully dilated and ready to push. They were a little concerned since she still was in a -1 to -2 station, but we decided to start pushing to see if she would descend.
I pushed for 2 1/2 hours, and I was exhausted. Unfortunately, our little girl had not budged one bit. She was still to high in the pelvis. They decided to do an emergency c-section at that time.
Elizabeth Anne Sparks was born on Wednesday April 5th, 2006 (04-05-06) at 3:34 a.m. She weighed 9 lbs 11 oz and was 20 1/2 inches long. Once I heard that I knew why she wasn't budging. She was too big!!!! She is absolutely perfect and is adorable!! I'll be posting pictures soon.
I spent a total of 5 nights in the hospital. We would have gone home sooner but my blood count was really low, so I had to have a blood transfusion. We are all fine now and are glad to be home. I'm so glad that she is finally here.
